Du Plessis outlasts Usman over five rounds to keep middleweight title in Oklahoma City

The champion swept the scorecards at Paycom Center, keeping the middleweight belt over the full five rounds.

Dricus Du Plessis beat Kamaru Usman by unanimous decision last weekend, going the full five rounds at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City to keep his middleweight title.

Du Plessis did enough across 25 minutes to take all three scorecards.

Usman, a former welterweight champion, moved up to challenge for the belt. He could not turn the fight in the championship rounds, and Du Plessis walked out still holding the title.

Much of the July 18 card went the distance. Christian Leroy Duncan won a unanimous decision over three rounds. Fatima Kline and Alden Coria also earned unanimous-decision wins after three rounds each.

The finishes came fast when they came. Chase Hooper submitted his opponent in the first round, and Dione Barbosa won by first-round submission as well.

Felipe Franco scored a second-round knockout. RJ Harris was quicker still, ending his fight by knockout in the first round.

Elsewhere on the card, Tommy McMillen stopped Alberto Montes by KO/TKO in the third round. Jose Miguel Delgado beat Austin Bashi by unanimous decision, and Jean Paul Lebosnoyani did the same to Seokhyeon Ko over three rounds. Ezra Elliot closed out his fight with a unanimous decision over Damien Anderson.

The result keeps Du Plessis at the top of the middleweight division after a five-round defense in front of the Oklahoma City crowd.
